Hebrews 11:1-40
Having encouraged his readers to "keep the faith" despite the pressures under which they were living, and having delivered warnings to them about the dangers of abandoning the faith, our writer now defines, describes, and illustrates faith and hope so that there will be no confusion.
I. Clarifying the Significance of Faith.
A. We are those who "believe and are saved." 10:39
B. We are those who have been "made righteous" by faith.
C. We are those who now "live by faith." 10:38
D. We are those who do not "shrink back" but "win through to life."
E. We are those who know "without faith it is impossible to please God." 11:6
II. Clarifying the Difference Between Hope and Faith. 11:1
A. Children are often afraid of the dark.
B. Adults never escape their dread of the unknown.
C. They cope by hope - which may or may not be valid.
D. "Faith is being sure of what you hope for."
E. "Faith is being certain of what we do not see."

Part 6: Growing Weary and Losing Heart

Hebrews 12:1-3
Various metaphors have been used to describe the Christian life. Some see it as a war to be fought, others as a party to be enjoyed, others as a task to be completed and still others as a race to be run. The writer of Hebrews chooses the race metaphor.
I. Life As a Race to be Run. 12:1, 2
A. The prominent place of "Games" in the first century of the Christian era.
1. Greece - Gymnasium, Palaestra, Stadium. Olympian, Isthmian Games.
2. Rome - Circus Maximus, Colosseum.
3. The use of the metaphor. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, Philippians 3:12-14
B. Participation in the race required preparation.
1. Ten months' preparation; oath to play by the rules.
2. Christians must "throw off every kind of weight" and "entangling sin."
C. Participation in the race requires acceptance of the course laid out.
1. "The race marked out for us" - we don't choose our own course!
