John 12:37-50
The wise men saw the star and followed it to Bethlehem. You could say they "saw the light." There were many who also saw it but did not follow. Christ said, "I have come into the world as a light" and He explained how some respond and some don't-and why.
I. Revelation-"I Have Come as a Light."
A. Life and light. John 1:4-9
1. In the beginning was the Word.
2. In Him was life-inanimate, animate.
3. That life was the light of men-
a. Intelligence.
b. Moral sensitivity.
c. Spirituality.
B. Death and darkness.
1. Life and light sustained by loving obedience. Genesis 2:16-17
2. Death and darkness entered because of independent disobedience.
3. Darkness-
a. Intelligence without faith.
b. Moral sensitivity without truth.
c. Spirituality without life.
C. Light and darkness.
1. Believe or disbelieve. 12:44
2. Trust or distrust. 12:36

Part 6: Serving, Not Served

Matthew 20:20-28
Perhaps one of the most striking things Christ said about His incarnation was that He had not come to be served, but to serve, and that His disciples should develop the same attitude. Judging by the disciples' attitudes, this was not going to be easy.
I. An Expression of Self-Interest.
A. The "self-interest" attitude.
1. "You only go around once."
"If this is the situation…it is better not to…" Matthew 19:10
2. "You owe it to yourself."
"What will there be for us?"
3. "Staying ahead of the competition."
"They began to rumble…" Matthew 20:11
4. "Looking out for Number One."
The impertinence (Matthew 20:21) and the indignation (Matthew 20:24).
B. The "self-interest" danger.
1. Ears deafened to the truth. Matthew 20:17-19
2. Eyes blinded to the realities. Matthew 20:22
II. An Example of Self-Denial. Matthew 20:28
