In Conclusion - A Graduation Sermon

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14
Since the beginning of this year we have been preaching through the book of Ecclesiastes. Ecclesiastes is the personal spiritual diary of King Solomon. At the beginning of his reign as King, God gave him permission to ask for anything he desired. Solomon asked God to give him wisdom to judge his people.
God was pleased at his request. He not only gave him wisdom, but he gave him things he did not ask for. He gave him wealth, fame, and victory over his enemies.

He tried lust. He had 700 wives and three hundred concubines. He married women from different nations to give him insurance from invaders.
He tried luxury. He had second houses, ponds, gardens, gold, flocks and herds, and slaves.
He tried labor. He had building projects going on everywhere.
He tried learning. His books would earn a doctor's degree today.
He tried liquor. He gave his heart to know wine.
Here we have an educated man who has traveled extensively, studied tirelessly, had the means to try it all, and did. Yet, his conclusion to his pursuits was emptiness raised to the highest degree.
¬ People like Solomon were given to us as examples of what to do and what not to do in life. He made some good decisions and he made some bad decisions in his life. We should learn from his example. We should also be grateful that he shared this information with us. He is giving us more than good advice. He is giving us direction for life.
