There are many ways of motivating people. This is particularly true in religious experience. But Paul told Titus how believers ought to be motivated in the Christian church.

I. Motivating Includes Underscoring What Is Important.

A. Where salvation originates.
1. The grace of God. v. 7
2. The appearing of Jesus Christ. v. 6
3. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit. v. 5

B. What salvation incorporates.
1. Washing of rebirth. v. 5
a. Cleansing from past defilement.
b. Opportunity for a fresh beginning.
c. Question of means:
i. Word? ii. Baptism?

2. Renewal by the Holy Spirit. v. 5
a. A new man. Colossians 3:10
b. A new mind. Romans 12:2
c. A new movement. 2 Corinthians 4:16

Part 8: Warning God's People

Titus 3:9-15

The churches in Crete were being subjected to influences that threatened their very existence. The possibilities for division and disintegration were great, and Paul warned Titus that he must address this issue. While the circumstances differ, the possibilities or "church splits" remain and we need to be on our guard against such things.

I. Warning-Division in the Church Cannot Be Accepted.
A. The anatomy of a division.
1. The raising of an issue…"foolish controversies." v. 9
2. The introduction of an emphasis…"endless genealogies."
3. The reaction of the people…"arguments." e.g. 1 Corinthians 3:1 4
4. The escalation of the situation…"quarrels" lit. fights.

B. An analysis of a division.
1. Differences are inevitable.
a. Differences of scriptural knowledge.
b. Differences of spiritual experience.
c. Differences of social graces.
d. Differences of psychological make up.

2. Difficulties are probable.
a. Because positions are not clear.
b. Because perspectives become clouded.
c. Because personalities become involved.
d. Because parties are formed.
