Deuteronomy 1:1-8

When Jehovah told Moses what to say to the children of Israel on the eve of their entrance to the Promised Land, He talked about a "good land" (6:18) filled with "good things" (6:11) that He wanted them to "enjoy" (6:2). But He insisted that they must "do what is right and good" (6:18). Anyone interested in enjoying the good life should study what Moses said in Deuteronomy!

I. Who Said It?

A. Moses-extraordinarily gifted. Acts 7:20, 22
B. Moses-supernaturally called. Acts 7:30, 35-36
C. Moses-uniquely privileged. Exodus 33:11
D. Moses-unusually devoted. Hebrews 11:25-26

II. What Did He Say?

A. "All that the Lord has commanded…" Deuteronomy 1:3
B. "Expound this law." Deuteronomy. 1:5; 27:8

III. Whom Did He Say It to?

A. "All Israel"-"God's covenant people." Deuteronomy 5:1-3

Part 2: Relating to the Lord (Y)our God

Deuteronomy 1:6-46

When Moses gave his "marching orders" address to the children of Israeli as they prepared to enter the Promised Land, he emphasized the importance of their relationship with God. Notice how often he used the expression "the Lord (y)our God."

I. Recognizing the Lord (Y)our God.

A. His character.
1. Lord = "Jehovah" = Self-existent one. Exodus 3:12-15
2. God = "Elohim" = Sovereignty. (Note: pl. of "El")
3. Sovereign = "Adonai" = Majesty. (Note: pl. of "Adon")

B. His covenant-"Lord (y)our God."
Note: "God of your fathers" (v. 11); "Swore he would give…" v. 8
1. God's covenant with Noah. Genesis 9:9f
a. "Never again…"
b. Rainbow.

2. God's covenant with Abram. Genesis 15:18-19
a. "I give this land," etc.
b. "Abram believed."

3. God's covenant with Moses (Israel). Exodus 19:3f
a. "My treasured possession," etc.
b. "We will obey."

4. God's new covenant promise to Jeremiah. Jeremiah 31:31f
a. "I will be their God," etc.
