Part 5: Thinking Clearly About Christians and Society
Series: Thinking Clearly In A Messed Up World
Stuart Briscoe
Romans 12:14 21

Richard Niebuhr said, "It is helpful to remember that the question of Christianity and civilization is by no means a new one; that Christian perplexity in this area has been perennial, and that the problem has been an enduring one through all the Christian centuries" (Christ and Culture: 2). That being the case it is unlikely we will solve the problem but we can do some straight thinking about it.

I. The Place of Christians in Society.

A. The teaching of Christ.
1. Christians are "still, in the world." John 17:11
2. Christians are "not of the world." John 17:16
3. Christians are "sent into the world." John 17:18

B. The testimony of the Church.
1. They established a presence. Acts 2:41
2. They elicited a response. Acts 2:47
3. They experienced a backlash. Acts 8:1

II. The Persecution of Christians by Society.

A. The execution of Christ.
1. Religious hostility.

Stuart Briscoe
Romans 13:1 7

For generations Christians have found Jesus' famous statement, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's" (Matthew 22:21) a helpful basis for understanding the relationship of the Christian to the State. But how does it apply today?

1. Jewish theocratic idealism.
2. Roman army of occupation.
3. Herodian collaborators.
4. Zealot freedom fighters.

B. The situation in Rome.
1. A ruling elite.
2. A disenfranchised majority.
3. A protected Jewish community.
4. A burgeoning Christian presence.
a. Formerly tolerated as Jewish sect.
b. Now mistrusted by Jews and Romans.

II. The Biblical Explanation.

A. The role of the State.
1. Appointed by God. v. 1
