BUILDING A YOUTH MINISTRY THAT STAYS FRESH AND FLOURISHES
Building a Youth Ministry That Stays Fresh and Flourishes
Frank Damazio
INTRODUCTION: A youth ministry grows because of supernatural activity, thus growth is accomplished through the Holy Spirit. A youth ministry growing spiritually and numerically is a by-product of a right relationship with the Lord of the church. The health and spiritual depth of a youth ministry cannot be measured by methods, models, programs, marketing strategies, or organizational structure. The real issue is the supernatural empowering of the youth ministry which occurs when it dwells in right relationship with its head, the Lord Jesus. The spiritual integrity and character of the youth ministry will ultimately determine the ability of that ministry to grow. Doing right comes out of being right. A heart for God leads to a Spirit-controlled life and a Spirit-controlled youth. The fruit of the Spirit gives evidence of the life of Christ active in the youth. It is not wise for the church to pursue the corporate model for when we emphasize ''doing'' over ''being'' we lose far too much. A youth ministry cannot be built with the same principles that corporate America uses. It is much different in that it has a spiritual life force and its principles do not match the corporate, secular world mindset.
The vision of every youth ministry is to reach unsaved, unchurched people, making them into disciples that reach people who build Christ's church and extend His kingdom. The vision is to build a youth ministry that honors the principles found in the New Testament. The vision of every youth pastor and leader is to care for the people that God has given in a scriptural and spiritual manner. The fulfillment of vision necessitates strong and spiritually healthy leadership. A freshness of spirit and soul can be cultivated and, if necessary, restored to the life of a leader.
