Taking Up Your Mantle

INTRODUCTION: Every person has a mantle to pick up and wear according to the will of God. This mantle may be missed, rejected and worn carelessly or it may be worn correctly and with dignity. You have a custom-made mantle on its way to fit around your life and ministry. I. ELIJAH - A PROPHET THAT PASSES THE MANTLE
1 Kings 19:16 Also you shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi as king over Israel. And Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place.
1 Kings 19:19 So he departed from there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he was with the twelfth. Then Elijah passed by him and threw his mantle on him
BBE: "And Elijah went up to him and put his robe on him."
ASV: "And Elijah passed over to him and cast his mantle upon him."

A. DEFINING THE WORD "MANTLE"
1. From the Hebrew word addereth translated glory, cloak, splendor, magnificent, mantle.
a. From adar we get two words. The first is addir which means majestic, superior to something else, mighty, noble, principal. It is used in parallel to the "mighty ones" in Judges 5:13 and the "rulers" and leaders." Hebrew addiyr is translated as wide or large of powerful, excellent, famous, mighty, noble, worthy. A large, roomy garment. It was the cape or the wrapper garment.
