As the great philosopher Yogi Berra put it, "Déjà vu, all over again".
OPENING ILLUSTRATION: Perhaps there is no better illustration of this fact than in the elite culture experience - American Idol. Last week began season 10 of American Idol with the new Judges Steven Tyler and JLo. The format of the show is the same formula that has worked all these years. There's a casting call in a metropolitan city. Thousands of people come out to the Holiday Inn or the Civic Center. Some people they've got it and they know they've got it. Other's remember that there momma said, "baby you are good". So, you have these preliminary judges walking around with a camera and microphone and randomly picking people out of the audience to audition.
You know how it goes - they find the real talent and for the sake of comic relief they pick a few others…
NOW - it never ceases to amaze me that when this no-talent crowd comes before the Judges, they are sincerely shocked when they are rejected and laughed at. Why is that? Well think about it - they got picked! Out of thousands of people at the holiday inn… they got picked. They got to go into the green room and fix up their wardrobe. Them they got to appear before Steve Tyler of Areosmith and Jennifer Lopez…. They are thinking… Momma was right! I am good!
So then they reach deep down inside and perform their best accapela rendition of, "I have nothing" by Whitney Houston.
I think to myself, didn't you watc ...
