OPENING ILLUSTRATION: Well it's valentine weekend and as I considered our text there is nothing I would like to do more than to stoke the fires of romance.
Christian Men out to be the most Romantic - A couple who had been married 50 years were sitting on the sofa…The wife said, "Do you remember how you used to sit real close to me… he sat real close to her… The wife said, "Do you remember how you used to hold me tight? So he reached over and held her tight…The wife said, "Do you remember how you used to kiss me and nibble my ear… The husband got up and walked out of the room… Where are you going the wife said, "To get my teeth"!!! There are parts of the bible that are very romantic. As a matter of fact the Song of Solomon is so full of romantic and intimate allusions that the Puritan would tear it out of the bibles they gave their young people and Jews were not allowed to read it until they were 30.
So the Bible is Pro-Romance. There are many texts that remind us of the gift of romance and intimacy between a husband and a wife- but today's text, well it's not the most romantic.
CONTEXT: Let's briefly recap what we know of the life of this man Jacob.
• Chapter 27 - We see Isaac growing old and ready to hand out the inheritance to his son Esau, but Jacob dressed up like his brother and deceived his father into giving him the blessing.
• Chapter 28 - It was then that Isaac and Rebecca sent Jacob away to Haran, putting 500 miles between him and Esau. He was sent with one commission - GET A WIFE and come home. Now, Isaac somewhat frustrated with Jacob sent no dowry. It's important that you see this. In this day a good and godly wife was greatly valued and it was common to pay a great price to the family for her hand in marriage. That's important for our story later.
• NOW Away from family and friends when he is brought to his lowest point God showed up in the form of a dream of a lad ...
