A story is told about the Devil. The Devil was having a yard sale. He had his tools on display. He had a high price on pride, on arrogance, on laziness, on envy and jealousy and bitterness. He had one tool that had a sign that said, "Not for sale." They asked the Devil, "What is up with that? Why is that tool not for sale?" He said, "That is my chief tool. That is my number one tool. I can't get rid of that one. That is the tool called discouragement. With that tool I can pry open a person's heart and do most anything I want to do."

We are in a series called, "Facing the Giants." Last week we looked at the Giant of Shame and this week we want to look at the Giant of Discouragement. Webster defines discouragement this way: it is the state of being deprived of confidence, hope, spirit or courage. Someone has well said that discouragement is the common cold of emotions. All of us can relate to discouragement from one degree to another. Companies have seized on the fact that we as human beings deal with discouragement and they have tried to make light of discouragement and make a buck off discouragement. Some companies have come up with some pretty witty posters to highlight discouraging things. Look on the screens. Problems, that is a picture of an iceberg. It says this, "No matter how great and the tip of them." That is a de-motivator. That is a de-motivating poster. How about this one for Potential? "Not everyone gets to be an astronaut when they grow up." How about this one for loneliness? "If you find yourself struggling with loneliness, you aren't alone and yet you are alone, so very alone." That is just horrible. How about this one for ambition? "The journey of thousand miles sometimes ends very, very badly." Wow! There is this one for lovers: "Destiny. You were meant for me. Perhaps as a punishment."

We laugh at those because we can relate to feel ...
