Now, when you think about going back to school, you think about grades and making the grade. And all of us want, when we're in school, we want to make good grades. And teachers like to give out good grades.
I heard about one little boy. He was only in 2nd Grade. And he came up to his teacher one day about the middle of the semester, and he said, "Now, Miss Smith…" He wasn't doing very well in school. He said, "Miss Smith, I don't want to alarm you, but my daddy says if my grades don't improve, somebody's going to get a spanking".
Now, obviously, he didn't understand how the grade system was working. It wasn't the teacher's responsibility; it was his. But he knew he wanted to make the grade.
Did you know in the Christian life, God wants you to make the grade? God wants you to excel. God wants you to live the Christian life and pass with flying colors. And one of the first lessons that you have to learn if you're going to make the grade in the Christian life, you have to learn the secret to standing strong. See, there are pressures on every Christian to cave in; pressures that knock us back. And God wants us to stand strong. it is one thing to live the Christian life when you're at church on a Sunday morning. How hard is that? Everyone is kind of pulling for you on Sunday morning. But how about Monday at the office? Monday at school? Monday in the neighborhood? How about Sunday afternoon in the family? Maybe you're a member of a family and much of the family is not Christian, and you're kind of a lone ranger. It's tough. That's where the rubber hits the road. And Jesus said that you and I are to be salt and light to a lost and dying and darkened, corrupt world. And in order to be salt and light, you have to stand strong.
