I Pity the Fool (2 of 7)
Series: How to Win at the Game of Life
Pastor Jeff Schreve
Proverbs 1:17
On May 21, 1952, a baby was born. He was the 12th child of the Turo Family. They named him Lawrence. He was a big kid, a strong kid, grew up playing sports, playing football. Went into the military. He was an MP, military policeman. He got out of the military and became a bouncer. And he was big and strong and tough. And he didn't really like his name, Lawrence Turo, so he changed it in his 20s to Mr. T. Mr. T. is a famous, famous guy. Probably most of the people in this room didn't know that his name was Lawrence Turo, but that's his given name. But now his name is Mr. T. And Mr. T. is known for several things - his Mohawk, his gold chains, and a particular phrase that made him famous when he had his acting debut in the movie, Rocky III - "I pity the fool." (movie sound is played). That's Mr. T. And, you know, when he talks about pitying the fool and what's his prediction for the fool pain, that's exactly what God says in His Word. God pities the fool. And God says that the fool is on a course of pain and heartache and disaster.
Now, as we study the book of Proverbs in our series, "How to Win at the Game of Life," what you're going to find as you read Proverbs is that God speaks over and over and over and over again about this person called the fool. And I know that when I preach a sermon on the fool, there are a bunch of people in this room or people watching on television, and they say, "Well, this sermon doesn't apply to me because I'm not a fool. I mean, I'm smart. I'm educated. I did really well on my SAT test. And, ah, after all, I mean, ah, I'm at the top of my class. And, and, ah, I, I'm, you know, doing well in the business world. And I live in a nice house. And I have, drive a nice car. And I, and I got a big job and make a lot of money. And I'm not a fool." But you have to remember, when God speaks of the fool in the book of Proverbs, He's not tal ...
