The Word of God (3 of 4)
Series: Get Real
Jeff Schreve
2 Peter 1:12
I want to ask you tonight, how many in here have ever gone on a diet? Anybody ever gone on a diet? All right, just a few of you. But I think a lot of us, once you get over a certain age; you're kind of prone to be watching your weight. And I have never really had a problem with my weight until the last few years. It's like you turn 40 and, and things start to sink. I don't know what it is, but that just happens. And I've been on a diet kind of cutting carbs and it's working pretty good. And I was doing good for a while. But, you know, you get tired of doing that. And one of the problems that you have on being on a diet, if you're like me, I like to eat. You know, that's one of the big problems. And you're around food, and you get hungry, and you just want to eat. And, then, you just have a craving for chocolate and, or potato chips or stuff that you shouldn't eat. And it's difficult to diet because most people, almost all people, really like to eat. And eating is a pleasurable thing. And, you know if you don't eat right, if you don't eat enough, you get very, very sick. And if you don't eat for a long period of time, you will die, „cause you have to have food. Every living thing has to have food to grow.
Now, in the Christian life, the Bible is referred to as food. Jesus said, ''Man shall not live by bread alone, but every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'' The Word of God is bread. Peter says that, ''As newborn babes, long for the pure milk of the
Word, that by it you may grow with respect to salvation.'' Peter says it's not only bread, it's milk. And the writer of Hebrews says it's not only bread and milk; it's also meat. It's solid food. It helps you and me grow. And if you want to grow in the Christian life, you have to feed on the Word of God. There is no getting around it. You have to do it. And if you don't do it, you won't grow.
