The Rose Bowl has been called, among college football bowl games, the granddaddy of all the bowl games. The Rose Bowl began in the early 1900s, and it came with the Tournament of Roses Parade. The Rose Bowl is filled with a lot of pomp and circumstance. And it's been the site of so many great games. Many Rose Bowl champions have gone on to become the national champion. They won the Rose Bowl game, and then they were crowned the national champion because they won that game. Very special game.

History records so many great moments in the Rose Bowl, but on January 1, 1929, University of California was playing Georgia Tech in the Rose Bowl. And that game was known not so much for the game but for a particular play. It was late in the second quarter. The score was 0-0. It was a defensive struggle. Georgia Tech had the ball. They were on the 36 yard line. They snapped the ball. There was a fumble. One of the defensive linemen on the University of California football team scooped up the ball at the 40 yard line. He was hit when he scooped up the ball. It spun him around. When he came to his senses, but he was still on his feet. All he could see was the end zone. He saw an alleyway for the end zone. He began to run. And he ran and ran and ran and ran. He was just getting ready to cross the end line, and a player on his team ran up next to him and yelled at him, ''Roy, you're going the wrong way.'' He said, ''What?'' ''You're going to wrong way.'' And by the time he came to his senses and he turned around, Georgia Tech tackled him on the 1 yard line. Four plays later, Georgia Tech scored a 2-point safety. The half ended. They went into the locker room. Roy Riesel's was humiliated. He was embarrassed. He was ashamed. The coach gave the half time talk. Roy didn't hear anything. And then the coach said, ''Same group that started the first half is starting the second half.'' ...
