Introduction: On August 9, 1974, Richard Nixon became the first and only president to resign from office in disgrace following the Watergate cover-up. After resigning he retired to San Clemente a physically and mentally broken man. At the end of October 1974 Nixon underwent an operation to remove a clot from his leg, suffered an internal hemorrhage, and for a few days clung between life and death. Life for Nixon was pretty much over, right? Wrong. He recovered from his surgery and in 1976 made a much lauded, quasi-presidential trip to China. Two years later he was well received in England where he discussed East-West relations with Mrs. Thatcher, played the piano and sang Gilbert and Sullivan songs to the delight of the public. In 1979 President Carter invited Nixon to a White House dinner in honor of a Chinese diplomat. In the 1980's best-selling books poured out of him. In 1986 Time magazine put Nixon on its cover with the announcement, "He's Back." Three presidents were present for the opening of Nixon's presidential library in 1990 and FIVE presidents were at his funeral in 1994: all this for a man who left the White House in disgrace. Talk about a rebound!

But as remarkable as that rebound was, it pales in comparison to the rebound of King David of the Old Testament, if only because David's sins were more egregious than Nixon's. When we last left David he had committed adultery with another man's wife. The woman, Bathsheba, became pregnant and in an effort to hide his guilt, David arranged for her husband's death in battle so that he could quickly marry the man's widow. However, no one can hide from God and the Lord sent the prophet Nathan to confront David with his sin after which David made a public confession.

It would seem that David's life and career was over but it wasn't. David was able to rebound and salvage the end of his lif ...
