Ecclesiastes 9:7-12
Students at Oxford University, oldest English university in the world founded in the 11th century and now one of the prestigious universities in the world, have never been at a loss for ways to entertain themselves. You would think that these students with
the best and brightest minds would choose activities which would
be good and helpful, but that is not always the case.
Since 1503 students have jumped from the Magdalen Bridge on May 1st to celebrate the May festival despite the danger of injury due to low water levels in the spring. The rite is romantic and daring, but also treacherous and stupid.
The numbers of jumpers explided on May 1, 1993 when reporters swarmed the bridge, bribing students with champagne and cash
to take the plunge. Hundreds of students obliged. Some jumbed in the nude, others in tuxedos and others in large groups.
In the three years from 1993 to 1995 more than 130 jumpers have suffered injuries with 35 of them being serious. Two men are now crippled for life. And despite a major police effort in 1995, urging students to end the practice around 30 people jumped the 18 feet into the filthy and only 3 feet deep water.
Fifteen got sprained ankles or hypothermia. One genius dived head first and smashed his nose. All of them leaped to the tune of the 16th-century song, "O Lusty May," sung by the Magdalen boys choir, as 18,000 spectators looked on.
What foolish things people will do to entain themselves as they try to enjoy life without God. It is sad that instead of enjoying life the way God would have us do people find foolish and stupid things which end up hurting them instead.
Those foolish things can be drinking until you can no longer stand up or taking drugs to escape the reality of life or driving fast for the thrill without thinking about the consequences of your actions.
