Bringing People to Jesus
Jerry Watts
Mark 2:1-12
• Don't you like a good story which has a 'happily ever after' ending? We are told that Jesus entered Capernaum which has been suggested was "His" town. Obviously, Jesus spent a great deal of time in that area. Word got out that He was here and so people gathered until there was 'standing room only.' It kind of reminds me of the old timey revival services. Whether held in a tent or a building, people would come for miles around to hear the singing, testifying, and the preaching.
• He was in town 'speaking the message,' that is, the message of repentance, hope, love, and Father God and people came to hear what He had to say. His message was a message of hope, help, love, and life, and people wanted to hear it.
• Can you get this snapshot in your mind? Jesus was the teacher in a house which was filled to capacity. Quite likely, there was a small clamor outside because, unknown to Jesus, four men showed up carrying a bed upon which was their paralyzed friend and they were trying to get to Jesus. You know what happened.
• Those outside would NOT MOVE OUT OF THE WAY, because they got there first. In my sanctified imagination I can hear one of them say, "Please let us get our friend to Jesus, he really needs the healing Jesus has to offer." Sadly, the response might have been one of haughtiness, self-righteousness, or purely mean. Whatever the response, the four men KNEW they would not get him to Jesus this way. Some people will never stop blocking the path to HIM. Had you been in the crowd that day, would you have stepped aside and allowed someone to be brought to Jesus? The larger question is this; today, do I stand in the way of someone getting to Him?
• The four men would not be denied! They began to weigh their options. We could speculate but really do not know all the ways they considered for getting their friend to Jesus, but we do know what their final decision was - we'll lowered him ...
