England in the early 1700's was a difficult place to live. The country was riddled with crime and hopelessness which made it ripe for a spiritual revival. John Wesley, the founder of what would become the Methodist Church, began to preach a simple truth: salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

That message became a light in the darkness. It became a spark that would light a fire in the hearts of millions for generations to come. To reach the people he rode over 250,000 miles and preached over 40,000 sermons often to jeering crowds because he was convinced that salvation only came through faith in Jesus Christ not through the Church of England.

He grew up in a Christian home and had his own doubts about his salvation. He joined the Holy Club at Oxford believing he was a Christian, but when he went on a missionary trip to America he discovered that he really wasn't born again himself.

One night back in England he went to church and the pastor was reading the introduction of Luther's Commentary on Romans which described the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ. Suddenly in John's words his ''heart was strangely warmed.'' He realized he did trust Christ and Christ alone for his salvation. It was May 24, 1738 at 8:45 in the evening.

But less than a year after his conversion he wrote in his journal, ''I know that I am not a Christian. I know it because I do not feel that I love God and His Son Jesus Christ as my Savior.''

Even great men of God have doubts. What we do with those doubts determines whether our faith grows or becomes weaker.

C.S. Lewis in his book titled Mere Christianity wrote, ''Faith is the art of holding on to things your reason had once accepted, in spite of your changing moods.'' PERSONAL DOUBT :24-25
