Comfort Of God's Person (4 of 5)
Series: Greatness of God

Isaiah 40:21-26

J. A. Spencer in his History of the United States published in 1858, wrote about what took place at the Federal Convention in July 1787 in Philadelphia. The states were greatly divided on the question of how they should be represented in Congress with the larger states not willing to allow the smaller states equal voting rights because they didn't represent as many people.

The Convention came to a standstill as neither side would change their position. After long weeks with no agreement Benjamin Franklin addressed the representatives. He said, "Mr. President, the small progress we have made, after four or five weeks' close attendance and continual reasoning with each other, our different sentiments on almost every question, several of the last producing as many noes as ayes, is, methinks a melancholy (dark or gloomy) of proof of the imperfection of human understanding . . .

In the beginning of the contest with Britain, when we were in danger, we had daily payers in this room for divine protection.
And have we now forgotten this powerful Friend? Or do we imagine we no longer need his assistance? Our prayers, Sir,
were heard; - and they were graciously answered.

I have lived, Sir, a long time (he was now 81years old); and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth,
That God governs in the affairs of men!

God controls the world in which we live because he is sovereign.
He does what he chooses, when he desires and how he determines.
There is nothing he cannot do because he is in complete control.
He allows certain things to happen and stops other things from
happening because they are not part of his plan for the world.

God explains his greatness and sovereignty so he might persuade the people to trust him instead of their own nation or other nations.
