Hebrews 11:1-6
Introduction
We are going to talk about what faith can do for you. I want us to look first of all in Hebrews Chapter 11. Hebrews Chapter 11, as you all know, is the faith chapter. It talks about the exploits of God's people through the years that were done by faith.
As you look at this passage, when you get to verse six, there is a key phrase that we will really want to notice as we study this morning.
Beginning in Verse 1, "FAITH IS THE SUBSTANCE OF THINGS HOPED FOR, THE EVIDENCE OF THINGS NOT SEEN." The word substance is a word related to the word terra firma. When we talk about solid ground, we call it terra firma. The word substance means solid ground.
Faith is solid ground. Faith is not material, faith is not just mystical. Faith is not just something that is a philosophy but is something solid. Faith is solid ground.
The word hope for in verse one, the word hope there is not the word hope in the popular sense. You hope something will happen but you don't know whether it will or not; it is just by chance that it will or by chance that it won't. You hope you will win the lottery but it does not mean you are going to win the lottery but you hope you will.
Well, that is an example of what I am talking about that faith isn't. That is not what the word hope means. The word hope here means a confidence based upon God's promise. Confidence based on the promises of God and faith is not just some vague hope.
Faith is something you know will happen. You may not know when it will happen, how it will happen, but you do know that it is going to happen. It's the solid ground, standing on solid ground, because of the confidence that you have in things that you know will take place because it is based on God's word.
