Luke 24:13-27
Have you ever had an 'aha' moment where you just 'get it' where before there was no understanding? A moment, perhaps in math, reading, relationship, where the truth just smacks you square between the eyes, and you wonder why you haven't seen it that way before?
There is this amazing story in Luke that, to me, is one of the most compelling revelations of the heart of God! To get the full story, the stage needs to be set for the story to unfold properly.
Three days prior to this story, Jesus had been crucified, laid in the tomb loaned to him by Joseph of Arimithea. Fri-day night, the disciples and friends of Jesus huddle in despair. This continues through Saturday, and even early on Sunday morning, we find most of them still in hiding. Several ladies take the lead, go to the garden tomb to contin-ue to care for the body of Christ. They arrive to find the stone rolled away, the tomb empty, and are left with ques-tions about what truly had happened. They spread the news to the disciples, who are incredulous, waiting with bated breath for the next shoe to fall.
You have to understand, this Jesus was to be their redeemer, their king, the one to shake off the skackles of the Ro-man Empire. He was to lead a victorious army in defense of the Jews and run the rif-raff out of town! BUt then they saw him die. A gruesome death. One fitting a criminal, not a king. So there is no wonder they are a bit con-fused at the death of Christ, and now the body is missing. A cruel hoax, a game played by the Sanhedrin. They knew that arrests would soon follow.
At some point on that Sunday, two of the disciples decide to head back to Emmaus, about 7 miles outside of Jerusalem. This is a couple of hour walk, probably begun late in the afternoon in order to arrive by sundown. They begin the walk, heavy hearted and downcast.
