Following fifty years of oppressing exile in a foreign land, King Cyrus of
Persia announced that he would allow many of the people of Judah to
return to their native land. Ezra, the dpriest tells us that there were some
50,000 people who with their possessions made the long journey from
Babylon to Jerusalem. Upon returning they found that there was not much
left in people or resources. The city of Jerusalem was an ash heap. The
beloved temple had been completely destroyed. The ancient enemies of
Israel, the Edomites, the Moabites, and Ammonites had taken over their
beloved homeland. This was the discouraging situation which the company
of people under the leadership of Zerubbabrel as they came home again.
Twenty years after their return the temple of God had still not been rebuilt.
The people were discouraged and downcast, and at this critical moment God
raised up Haggai and Zechariah to encourage the Jew to immediately begin
building the house of God.
I have an idea that all 50,000 people had their own idea about how the
temple might be restored. If these had been Baptist people I have no doubt
there would have been 50,000 different ide ...
