Chapter one of James' Epistle dealt with our doctrinal application of God's Word. It is very important that we know what we believe and that our beliefs are rooted in strong Biblical doctrine. As we begin to exposit and expound chapter two, he has shifted gears and is steering believers in the direction of applying those doctrinal beliefs to a lifestyle where our actions are in line with what we say we believe. There is no doubt that this epistle is loaded with doctrine, but the major emphasis is being placed upon deportment. It seems that James' mission, given to him by the Holy Ghost, is to express sound doctrine, display personal warmth, declare wise council and encourage common sense. We also notice that James is a master at the use of illustrations. From the theme of "Living Right For the Redeeming Lord", we now have enrolled and are sitting in the classroom of "Loving Right For The Righteous Lord". He is now presenting us with a new set of challenges and thought provoking questions concerning whether we can live right without loving right. James declares that we cannot, and diligently sets out to explain why we can't. Favoritism was a problem then, and has seen a tremendous amount of growth in our modern day church.
