The next item on James' agenda is to pin point the sin of discrimination, flattery and favoritism. Written between the lines of these first five verses, we can see James' righteous anger coming to a boiling point. He is dealing with an ugly evil that needs to be recognized and extracted from within the walls of the house of God. These people are flattering the rich in hope of getting some monetary or social gain from them. I read somewhere, that a wise old preacher explained the difference between flattery and gossip. He said, "Gossip is what we say behind someone's back that we would never say to their face, and flattery is what we say to someone's face that we would never say behind their back". When I was a small lad, I used to hear people say, "if you can't say it to my face, then don't say it". Now that would take care of gossip, but would also promote flattery and favoritism to the maximum. This was a terrible problem and was one that James was intent on dealing with. The intensity of his words are getting progressively stronger with each verse. We continue to see:
