TEXT: Romans 8:1-17

INTRODUCTION: In this chapter, Paul contrasts the weakness of the Law and the flesh with the strength of the new nature in Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit in the believer, enabling him to live the godly life.
Let me give you our outline…
I. A NEW FREEDOM (VV. 1-4)

A. A New Life (vv. 1, 2)

1. Have you ever thought, "I would like to have a
new life; I would like to start over and do things right." I think we have all felt that. If we are honest, none of us can say we are pleased with the way we have lived our lives. Sure, there are times when we felt proud of our achievements and gratified that we fulfilled certain self-imposed expectations. But what I am talking about is not the standard we set for ourselves, or what someone else has thought of us, what I am talking about God's standard. As we read the Scriptures, we find that we have all fallen short of God's expectation. Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." To fall short means to miss the mark. And what does it mean to miss the mark? It means to fall short of God's requirement for perfection. The only way a man can go to heaven is to be perfect, without sin. No sin is allowed in God's presence. Because of our sin, we were placed under God's judgment and condemnation. Romans 5:18 says, "Therefore as by the offence of one (Adam) judgment came upon all men to condemnation…."

2. The good news is that we have been freed from
the law-the requirement for perfection, God's standard of holiness. It's not that God has rescinded His requirement, no, not at all; it is that Someone kept the law for us. No man has ever been able to keep all the commandments, no one except Jesus.
