TEXT: Romans 10:1-21
INTRODUCTION: Romans, chapter 10, continues with Paul's burden for his people. In vs. 1, he said, "Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved." In 9:3, he shared the depth of his concern, when he said, "For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh."
The problem for the Jews was that they had bound themselves to the law. They attempted to keep the law, not understanding that it was impossible to do so. Jesus actually called the law a curse because no man was ever able to keep it…no one except Him. In Galatians 3:10, the Bible says, "For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them."
The purpose of the law was to reveal man's sin and unrighteousness. The purpose of the law was to point men to Christ, who was the fulfillment of the law and all righteousness. Galatians 3:24 says, "Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith."
In Romans 9:31-33, it says, "But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. [32] Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; [33] As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed."
