Familiarity Breeds Contempt - The Power of Unbelief - Verses 1-6
1 And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him.
2 And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?
The questions they asked might appear to come from hearts of those who were genuinely amazed at the work of God done through Christ; but as we will see, they were the exact opposite. So Jesus and His disciples, fresh from this miracle of the healing of the demon-filled man, went home and the question for us to ponder is; what did He do when He got home? He continued to do what He had always done - teach the people the truth relative to the kingdom of heaven. This was the Father's plan for Christ; to teach and to preach redemption through Him. He entered into the synagogue which was the meeting place where the Jews formally gathered together to offer prayers and listen to the reading and expositions of the scriptures. He taught the people the truth in such a way that they were astonished, meaning that they all were struck with amazement. They were amazed at the wisdom, power and the associated miracles that accompanied His teaching and preaching. Now you would think that all of this would be sufficient enough for the people to come running to Him to be saved. You would think that with all of the undeniable evidence that He manifested before them that they would come running to Him to receive His teachings and redemption He offered. Even by their own testimonies, Christ' teaching were astonishing (knock out by them) and His mighty works (miracles) undeniable. But they never saw them for the purpose of why they were done.
