I must confess to you that the title and crux of this message was given to me many, many year ago. I want to set the table by telling you how this message came into being. Many, many years ago, a friend of mine came to me with a problem that he and his family endured for many years. He told me about how the church that they attended never met his spiritual needs. He told me of the financial swindling of his pastor and of alleged immorality going on in the church. He mentioned that he was spiritually dry and that he was about ready to give up on living this Christian life. I asked him this simple question; why are you still there?

As I began to explain to him about what the Bible said of the New Testament church and that he should find one as soon as possible and join it, he began to make excuses and justified staying in the same place he just complained about by saying that it was a part of their family tradition. Thus, the tradition trap was born.

Tradition, by definition means: The handing down of opinions, doctrines, rites, and customs from father to son or from groups to others, usually by oral communication.

Let me say that traditions in and of themselves can be either good or bad, depending on what we allow ourselves to follow. To hand down the legacy of the Scriptures and faithfulness to God, and what God would want every believer to do is right. But there are many traditions that are handed down from families, to families, from old, stale church members to new members and from our own personal thinking, that have no basis of biblical support whatsoever. The Pharisees, Scribes and Sadducees of Jesus' day were prime examples of religious hypocrisy and living by a false standard of righteousness while rejecting the word of God. There are many in the church world, some undoubtedly who were and are here in this church, who came and come strictly out of some form of tradition. ...
