Mark Chapter 9 (9 of 16)
Series: The Gospel of Mark

1 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.
As much as I would like to believe that every difficult passage has a clear and easy to understandable answer, I would be foolish to believe that this is so. This is clearly true of this first verse in Mark 9, which follows chapter 8:38, and does not begin a new topic, but ends the discussion in the latter part of chapter 8. One of the difficulties of this passage is that if it ties into the latter portion of the 8th chapter, verse 38, more specifically, which it probably does, then Jesus clearly spoke of an event that is future of every person He spoke to. If it is disconnected from the 38th verse of the 8th chapter, as many believe, then what does it relate to in the text in chapter 9? The second problem may not be as complicated as the first one, at least with my understanding. But before we go there, it is clear that there is no new thought between 8:38 and 9:1; as Matthew and Luke are clear about this. So we can eliminate that issue right away. Now, the second problem is in what Jesus said in the accounts. Matthew and Luke refer to the Kingdom relative to the coming of Christ, but Mark refers to Christ coming in power. I believe that it's rather easy to solve this issue by knowing that 8:38 clearly refers to a time when Christ will come to establish His kingdom and the power displayed is clearly evident in His coming. So this brings me back to the first problem; how does this relate to what Jesus said about the some of them that were present who would not die until they saw the Kingdom of God come with power through the coming of the Son of man?
Instead of saying "I don't know" as many should, including me, though I had an answer when I taught Matthew, the fact is that I do not understand what Je ...
