1 And he arose from thence, and cometh into the coasts of Judaea by the farther side of Jordan: and the people resort unto him again; and, as he was wont, he taught them again.

Before we get into Jesus' dialog with the religious leaders again, it's very important to be reminded of what Jesus continued to do whenever people gathered to Him; He taught them. I want to emphasize that truth over and over again because teaching has fallen on hard times in our age. But this is the example that Jesus gave and if we are to follow His example, then we are place a great emphasis on teaching. This is also confirmed by the word "wont". That word means, that which was customary, habitual or conventional (predictable). Jesus was known as a teacher and it was His trademark to do so and the people gathered to Him for His teaching. I do not believe that they always gathered for healings, though many healings took place, even in Matthew's account of the same event. Now we are about to embark on Jesus' teachings on divorce and remarriage.

2 And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.

Notice that the Pharisees did not come to learn anything because they thought they already knew the answer. Their enquiry was simply another "fault-finding" mission. They had no intention to learn a single thing. Remember, just because someone asks a question, even and especially a Biblical one, does not necessarily mean that they really want to learn anything. It may be to find fault in your answer and to give rise to a debate or argument. The best way to determine this is always to walk in the Spirit and to consider the history of the seeker(s). If they have been antagonistic to the truth all along, the chances are that they are continuing their desire to debate and argue; nothing more.
