1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.

Remember, these were the same women who followed Jesus afar off and witnessed the aftermath of His crucifixion (Mark 15:42).

2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.
3 And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?

The first day of the week is Sunday. The sun was just rising early Sunday morning. You may ask why did these women come to the tomb? According to other gospel accounts, she, and other women that came with her, came to anoint the body of Jesus with spices. They knew that there was a large stone placed in the front of the tomb and yet they came anyway to anoint Jesus' body, which they would soon find out was no longer in the tomb. Their concern was, "who was going to be awake this early to roll away this stone from the front of the tomb?" This many not seem to make much sense. To come to the tomb, knowing that there was a huge stone, which none of them individually, or all of them collectively, could move, and then to when they got to the tomb then asked, "Who is going to roll away the stone for us?" You might think that this should have been an issue they wanted to have answered before they went to the tomb, or maybe find some men who could do it for them before they went. But I believe that even this event was orchestrated also by the hand of God. These women would have the privilege of being the first to see the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ since they were so faithful to Him at that time, and certainly more faithful than His disciples, who were in hiding.
