INTRODUCTION: What a day it was. Amidst what some have called the worst economic downturn since the great depression over $150 Million dollars were spent to welcome this new kind of president to Washington. More than any inauguration before it.
"Change we can believe in" - was the slogan that took Barak Obama from the Illinois Senate to become the leader of the free world.
Jennifer Lovin a reporter for the Huffington Post remembered Obama's arrival into Washington this way, "Riding a vintage railcar on his whistle-stop trip to Washington, Obama carried with him the hopes of a nation weary of war, frightened of economic chaos and searching for better days"
TEXT - As we look into our text today we see another day of inauguration of a coming leader. One who promised change we MUST believe in.
We see another nation that was anticipating a change and was looking for a hero to lead them to better days.
For over 60 years Jerusalem had been under Roman occupation.
• The Governor Pontius Pilate leveled stiff taxes against the Jews to finance the ever growing Roman Empire.
• Worship was corrupted by the hypocritical high priest Caiaphas.
The people were growing weary and restless.
On top of that there was a growing prophetic fervor.
1) Suetonius wrote, "There had spread over all the Orient an old and established belief, that it was fated at that time for men coming from Judea to rule the world
2) Tacitus, the famous Roman historian, tells of the same belief that "there was a firm persuasion...that at this very time the East was to grow powerful, and rulers coming from Judaea were to acquire a universal empire."
3) Josephus, in Wars of the Jews, said that the Jews had a belief that "about that time one from their country should become governor of the habitable earth."
Why were the people so confident that a great leader was about to emerge?
