Intro: In the course of our lives, all of us have been given many different gifts and on many different occasions. While we cherish and are appreciative of all the gifts we have received, there will always be one special gift that will stand head and shoulders above the rest. As children of God, we have been given many gifts by our heavenly Father, but one gift remains above all the rest. That gift is the new birth that James describes by the words "begat he us with the word of truth". This is the greatest gift that any mortal man could ever receive. Many people have coined the phrase, "The gift that keeps on giving", but this is the gift that never ceases to give. It is eternal, everlasting life, but it is also Jesus Christ himself. We are now in Him. It now seems that James' intention is to exhort us to apprehend not only the new birth, but all the benefits and blessings that come as a result of our salvation. As we survey the past 17 verses, we can conclude that none of what is so thoroughly discussed in these verses, would have any real meaning or effect upon us, unless we had the miracle that is recorded in verse 18. This begatting consists of:
