1. In our last study we traveled with Elijah to Zarephath. Elijah would spend approximately two years in Zarephath. God sent him to Zarephath after a year spent at Cherith. At Zarephath he met a widow woman that God used to sustain him. God's call was, "Arise, get thee Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee" (1 Kings 17:9).

2. When he arrived at Zarephath he found the widow in dire circumstances. His first sight of her was while she was gathering wood to cook what she thought was be her and her son's last meal. However, God had sent Elijah to Zarephath to be sustained by the widow; therefore He first had to meet her need in order to meet Elijah's need. God intervened in her situation by providing an exhaustless barrel of mean and cruise of oil.

3. At some time during his time in Zarephath, the widow found herself facing another trial. God had wonderfully delivered her from one trial, but that did not exempt her from future trials. God's deliverance from a trial does not mark the end of all trials. Job said, "Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble" (Job 14:1). A. W. Pink said, "We live in a mutable world where nothing is stable, and where life is full of strange vicissitudes. We cannot, and we should not expect things to go smoothly for us any length of time while we are sojourning in this land of sin and mortality."(1)
