1. In our first trip with Elijah we traveled with him to Cherith. In our second trip with Elijah, we are on the road with him to Zarephath. Zarephath was a small Phoenician town located almost midway on the road between Tyre and Sidon. In the New Testament it is called by its Greek form, Sarepta (cp. Luke 4:26). The name means "smelting shop" which was descriptive of a workshop for the refining and melting of metals. Most believe that Zarephath is now known as Sarafend.

2. Once again we read that "the word of the LORD came unto him" (Vs. 8; cp. 1 Kings 17:2). On this second occasion that God spoke to Elijah, He said, "Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee" (Vs. 9). For over a year God had sustained Elijah at Cherith. In this word God assures Elijah of the continued provision of his needs. The location and method is changing, but the provision of his needs is certain.

3. In both Cherith and Zarephath God used an unlikely vessel to sustain Elijah. In Cherith He used a raven. In Zarephath, He used a poor widow. In each location God took the unlikely to reveal He was unlimited. In the raven God revealed that He could control all things to sustain his servant. In the widow He revealed that He could command all things to sustain Elijah.

4. God has promised to meet the needs of His people. Paul gave us the great promise, "But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus" (Phil. 4:19). Just as God sustain ...
