Series: Foundation
James Merritt
Hebrews 1:1-2; 2 timothy 3:16-17

Introduction

1. Foundation. How important both the word and the concept really is. Builders know this. One of the most important investments you will ever make is in your home. The single most important investment you will make in your home is in the foundation. If the foundation of a home (or any other building for that matter) is not properly laid then the entire edifice will be unstable and unsafe.

2. Teachers know this. Think about the all important ability to communicate, to read, to speak, or to write. One thing is essential to communication in any language - the alphabet. Why do teachers everywhere in every culture always begin by teaching children their a,b,c's? The ability to put letters together in a meaningful way is the foundation of communication.

3. Coaches know this. Anyone will tell you the foundation of a great baseball team is pitching and defensive. Football coaches will tell you that the game is ''won'' in the trenches. In other words, the foundation of a great football team is the offensive line and the defensive line.

4. Jesus knew this. He said in the greatest sermon ever preached, the sermon on the mount,
'''Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell--and great was its fall.' when jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at his teaching; for he was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.''
(matthew 7:24-29, nasb)
