1. The Bible often speaks of the world. It speaks of the world from three viewpoints. First there is the world as the planet on which we live. The Psalmist spoke of ''the foundations of the world'' (Psa. 18:15). It is a world created by God (Gen. 1:1) and a world controlled by God (Heb. 1:2-3).

2. It also speaks of the world not only as a planet but also as a people. In the beloved John 3:16 which tells us that ''God so loved the world,'' it is speaking of the people of the world. The object of God's love is the people who live on the planet He has created. He demonstrated His power in the creation of the world as a planet, but demonstrated His love in the redemption He provided for those who occupy the world.

3. The Bible also speaks of the world as a program. When James spoke of ''the friendship of world'' (James 4:4), he was speaking of a system that is man-centered and Satan-directed. It is a system that runs in contradiction to God's plan and purposes for His people. It is a system that is hostile to God's plan and God's people.

4. There was a time when we spoke of any relationship with the world by someone who is saved as worldliness. We don't hear that word much in our Churches in our day and time. I think it is largely because both the Christian and the Church have become so much like the world. Vance Havner said, ''The world has become so churchy and the church so worldly that you can't tell the two apart.'' Glen Spencer said, ''We have never seen a more religious world and we have never seen a more wicked churchianity.''
