The Kiss of Death
James Merritt
Matthew 26:14-16; 20-25; 47-50
Introduction
1. There are many famous people in the bible. There is moses otherwise known as charleton heston, who parted the red sea. There is daniel, who slept in a lion's den. There is david, the most famous giant killer in history. Then of course, there is jesus christ, simply the kings of kings and lords of lords. The most infamous person, in the bible, without a doubt, is judas iscariot.
2. He is, without question, the most wicked man in the bible. His is the saddest story in the bible. He has the most despised name in the bible.
3. Let me ask you a question and think about it carefully. Have you ever in your life ever met anyone named judas? You may have met someone named jude. Even the beatles would not write a song entitled, ''hey judas.''
4. I've met many, many men named matthew, mark, luke, john, peter, paul, andrew, and james, but i've never met a man whose mother named him ''judas.''
5. It is even worse than that. I have never heard of a master naming his dog judas. Today, we name our dogs ''uga'', but we don't' even name our pets ''judas.''
6. In john 17:12, jesus called judas, ''the son of perdition.'' the greek word for perdition literally means ''waste.'' an interesting fact that you may not know is that the name judas comes from the word ''judah'' which literally means ''praise''. His life, like every life, was meant to be a life lived in praise of god, but instead it was a complete waste.
7. Judas iscariot, who betrayed jesus christ with a kiss, has become the most detested person in history. The name ''judas'' itself bears such a stigma that nether children, nor pets, carry the name. The new testament writers had such a disdain for judas that every time you read a list of the disciples in the gospels, judas is always listed dead-last. Yet, one thing we learn because of judas - key take away: even when we betray god, god will not betray us.
