A Mother of Great Faith
Daniel Rodgers
Matthew 15:21-28
INTRODUCTION: In this passage of Scripture, we have the account of a mother's faith. The Lord has recorded for us a divine record of the accomplishment of one mother's trust in God.
When we think of people who live by faith, we admire them--the person who lives by faith, the person who walks by faith--the person who, by faith, attempts great things for God.
The Bible places a strong emphasis on faith:
a. Salvation is by faith in Christ: ''He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life.''
b. Victorious living is accomplished by faith: ''For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith'' (I John 5:4).
Jesus said, ''If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.'' Faith is the indispensable element in our relationship to God. The writer of Hebrews declares: ''But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him'' (Hebrews 11:6).
This morning, we will take a look at a mother who demonstrated great faith. Our story is given in three parts:
I. A Mother's Trouble
II. A Mother's Testing
III. A Mother's Triumph
I. A MOTHER'S TROUBLE
A. Her Circumstances
1. The Bible says this woman had a daughter who was ''vexed with a devil.'' This was trouble of the worst sort. How the daughter came to be possessed, we are not told, only that she was. How many mothers today have children who are living under the influence of Satan, though not possessed with a spirit, they nonetheless, have allowed a negative influence to control their lives. I don't know of a greater sorrow than the sorrow that comes to the mother of a wayward child or a child who is being controlled by the wrong influences.
