INTRODUCTION: On this coming Thursday, Jews around the world will celebrate Yom Kippur, Israel's Highest Holy Day. The Jews just celebrated Rosh Hasanah, the Jewish New year, on last Tuesday, September 30th. Actually, the holiday began the day before at 6:00 p. m. According to the Jewish calendar, there have been 5760 years since creation. I would say that is pretty close to correct. Contrary to evolutionists, there is no proof for an earth that is billions of years old. On the other hand, there is plenty of proof for a young earth, as found in the fossil record and the evidence attesting to a world-wide flood--Noah's Flood.

Back to Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Israel has 7 Feasts in all. Let me add; all of these special feasts or holidays foreshadow or represent Jesus and His church.

The first feast is Passover, a time when Israel sacrificed a lamb and shed its blood for the people. It was no coincidence that Jesus died on Passover. Paul states in 1 Corinthians 5.7, "Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us." Jesus is the Lamb of God, our Passover, who was sacrificed for us.

The second feast was Unleavened Bread. Leaven represents sin. There was no sin in Jesus, thus the unleavened bread. He is the Bread of Life.

The third feast was Firstfruits. God told the children of Israel that this feast was to be celebrated the day after the Sabbath, Sunday. 1 Corinthians 15.20 says, "But now is Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who sleep." Jesus died on Passover, was buried on the day of Unleavened Bread and arose on Firstfruits.

The fourth feast was Pentecost. Pentecost took place 50 days after the feast of firstfruits. Pentecost pointed to the coming of the Holy Spirit when He came to indwell believers--the church.
