INTRO: I want you to take your Bibles now this morning and be finding your place at Genesis 22 if you would. Since January is stewardship month at Temple, we've been in a series of studies looking at altars and offerings and sacrifices from the book of Genesis. And we've been asking this question every week to kind of get our hearts and minds on the same page. The question is, "What's on your altar?"
Now, we've already dealt with altar ego in the story of Cain and Abel's offerings and we learned there what it means to give from a faithful heart. Last week we dealt with altar expressions as we looked and learned from Noah's thankful offering after the flood. This morning we're going to talking about altar expectations and what it means to give from a sacrificial heart by looking at the story of Abraham and Isaac from Genesis chapter 22, so while you're finding your place there . . .
ILLUS: I don't know how many of you are familiar with this name, some probably are, many probably aren't, but two Fridays ago, January 11, 2008 one of the greatest men of the 20th century died. His name was Sir Edmund Hillary. For those of you who don't recognize that name, Edmund Hillary was the first man to climb to the top of the world. The time was 11:30 a.m. The date - May 29, 1953. After many years of planning, picking the right men to help, purchasing the right equipment and countless hours spent training and climbing, Sir Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay made it to the summit of Mount Everest and raised the British flag there. They had clawed their way up through the cold. They had faced danger and discouragement. Disaster and death had followed them the whole way up. They had to cut steps into walls of solid ice.
