INTRO: I want you to take your Bibles now this morning and be finding your place on this Christmas weekend Sunday morning at one of the greatest Christmas verses in all of the Bible. Genesis chapter 3, and verse 15. We've been in a study through this beginning book of the Bible for the last several weeks and so far we've seen the first day and the first planet and the first plant and the first ocean and the first mountain and the first animal and the first fish and the first bird and the first man and we've even seen the first woman – her name was Eve - and the Lord has so worked it out that this morning as we gather together as a church family to celebrate and remember the coming of Christ into this world that we could see the first promise ever given in the Word of God. It's a promise concerning the coming of Christ into a world that had rebelled against the Father's command – we saw that last week – and as a result had fallen into a terrible condition that the Bible calls "sin." And so, in response to man's sinfulness God gives to a subtle, slimy, sneaky serpent (and us as well) the promise of Christmas.

Now, if you're like me, the first time that I heard that I thought to myself, "That can't be right. The first promise of Christmas had to have been when that angel came to Mary in Luke 1:30-31 and said, 'Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS.' That's got to be the first promise of Christmas. Or maybe it was in Matthew chapter 1, verse 23 where the angel came to Joseph and said to him. "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us." Or maybe its even back in the Old Testament. Maybe its that verse in Micah chapter 5 where it tells us that the messiah would ...
