Introduction: Collectively we call ourselves "First Christian Church." Individually those of us who have received God's grace provided in the cross refer to one another as "Christians." In this case, words mean something. We are followers of Christ. We are not devoted to "churchianity" though the church is important to us. We are first devoted to Christ. We are not "biblicists" committed first of all to a book. God's book is certainly vital. I wouldn't be here preaching and teaching from it if I didn't believe that. But that's not first.

We are Christians! That means the one thing that binds us together is our common allegiance to Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord. That's what new members and candidates for baptism are asked to confess in this church. Christ is our creed, the central object of our faith.

Because this is true, the most important part of the Bible for us is the books we are considering tonight. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John present the story of Jesus. Christians love those books. They tell us the story of the One we follow! We read those books because they define our faith and outline our code of conduct. When asked what we believe, it is what is in these books that we first point to. They contain our testimony.

Tonight we continue the third year of an estimated four-year Journey through the Bible. In this study, I will overview four Gospels by comparing and contrasting them. In the following messages, I will work through them one at a time. Once that is completed, I will backup and review some of the key themes that should be at the head of our "want to know" list. I want to organize our overview of the four Gospels by asking and answering three important questions.
