THE LILY OF THE VALLEY

The Lily of the Valley
Rex Yancey
Luke 24:27

Song of Solomon 2:1 says, "I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys." This would seem to indicate that there is surface beauty to the Savior. This is not so according to Isaiah 53:26, "And when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him." Some only have a surface religion. They are overwhelmed with the crosses, chants and candles. They are overwhelmed with their temples and traditions. They know nothing of the deeper meaning of the "I Am."

I never cease to be amazed at the politicians who run a campaign trumpeting their religion. And so many times, when they get in office they vote for things that are anti-Christian. They seem to see no connection between their belief and their behavior. Their religion is something they do and not something they are. They know nothing of the deeper meaning of the "I Am."

I never cease to be amazed at the church members who can take or leave worship. They can give the most fickle excuses as to why they will not be in church the next Sunday. It may be a golf match or a turkey hunt. It might even be a flea market where they might pick up some "Fleas!" They know nothing of the deeper meaning of the "I Am."

Jesus picks up this "I AM" passage from Exodus. God said to Moses, "Tell Pharaoh I am that I am hath sent thee." Dr. J. Hardee Kennedy translated this passage, "I shall continually be that which I repeatedly have been." His past performance was a guarantee of his future actions.

It is amazing that God the Father and Jesus go by the name of the verb "To be." There must be a reason for that. I will point out three.

1. THIS NAME IS A DECLARATION OF HIS DEITY.
After the resurrection, Jesus said, "Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself." "I am." The Rose of Sharon is God. The Lily of the valleys is the God-man. This was the most Holy name the Jews knew for God.

King Edward abdicated his throne to marry Wally Simpson. ...
