We are studying the book of Daniel as you well know and we finished chapter four last week and we are in chapter five today. Napoleon Bonaparte - in the early days of his ambitious life and all of his power and all the things that he could do -- someone asked him this: whose side is God on in the battle? Napoleon said, "It is the side of the one with the biggest guns." His attitude was I am in control. We don't need God because we have my leadership. We have the weapons that we have. We can do whatever we need to do. When he was exiled on the island of St. Helen and was dying of cancer, he changed his mind. He made another statement: man proposes, God disposes. Then he said, "I am not sovereign nor any king." "We are under the leniency of God." What a change.
Last week we learned about King Nebuchadnezzar who was so stubborn. He had so many opportunities, but God had to take him all the way to the bottom. He took him down to eat with the animals and to act like the animals and to lose his mind. But then he came out of that to praise God. In verse 37 of chapter 4: Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and exalt and glorify the kingdom of heaven because everything he does is right. And all his ways are just. Those who walk in pride he is able to humble. And he knew what he was talking about because he had to go to the bottom. This great king was saying I was preoccupied with the wrong kingdom. I was preoccupied with Babylon that I thought would last forever. I thought it would endure, but now I have met the true God and he has changed my life and I have a new world view. I know now that Babylon is passing away, but there is a kingdom that last forever.
