INTRO: I want you to take your Bibles now this morning and be finding your place at Matthew chapter 26 if you would. This morning we will be concluding our series of character studies on the 12 men that were called and commissioned by Jesus to go out and change the world. Now, if you'll remember, when we began this series of studies, I told you that we were going to be studying the strengths and the weaknesses, the victories and the defeats, the heights and the depths of these men who are called "the 12 apostles." And of course, they all had their strengths and they all had their weaknesses -- just like we do. They had moments when they were living and moving in victory and then there were those times when they absolutely, totally and completely blew it. I mean, from asking for front-row seats in Heaven to displaying anger and prejudice to doubting and denying and even deserting Jesus, these men showed each and every day that they had feet of clay just like we do.

BUT -- the most devilish defeat, the biggest betrayal, the wickedest waste of position and possibility ever was plotted and perpetrated by a devilish disciple by the name of Judas Iscariot. As a matter of fact, Judas is mentioned in every in every one of the lists of the twelve disciples, except the list that's found in Acts, and every single time that he's mentioned he's marked as either "the traitor" or "the one who betrayed Jesus." But perhaps the most accurate and applicable title ever given to this traitor by the name of Judas Iscariot was spoken by the One who he betrayed in John 17, verse 12 where Jesus called him "the son of perdition." Do you know what the word "perdition" means? It means "destruction" or "waste." And so, here in Matthew chapter 26 we are told about the tragedy of a wasted life.
