What is the will of God for you? What on earth does heaven want from you? Everyone wrestles with those questions in lots of different ways. That's what drives people to psychics, horoscopes, and all sorts of weird mystical pursuits. Others of us are agnostic about it. We conclude that "nobody knows" therefore we just plunge ahead doing our own thing. Or we develop a totally skeptical approach. God doesn't care what happens in my life so there is no will of God to discover, so we tell ourselves.
Our text says otherwise. God's does care. He does have a will and it can be known. Listen again to the end of Romans 12:2, "Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." The "then" of the verse points back to how a person gets to the point of testing and approving God's will. That's what I want us to look at today.
We are in the beginning stages of a six-week study of Romans chapter 12. In a sense, the entire chapter is about God's will—what he wants from us. The chapter presents one of the Bible's most straightforward, no nonsense, outlines of the Christian lifestyle. Because of that I am calling this series of messages—The Christian's Job Description. Over the next several weeks, we will work our way, piece by piece, though the twenty-one verses of this marvelous chapter.
Romans 12 divides into several paragraphs or units of thought with each successive section adding a new level to our understanding of how a Christian should live. Verses 1 and 2 provide the foundation under the entire structure. The following pieces like the floors of a multi-story building rise up from that foundation.
