INTRODUCTION: In our lesson last week, we talked about the importance of submitting to the ordinances of man—human government. And the reason? God established human government; and unless the laws of the land violate the laws of God, we are to obey to them (vs. 13).

Secondly, we talked abut God's will concerning our relationship with those who have been placed in authority over us (vs. 18-20).

Tonight's lesson will conclude chapter two, with our focus on Christian suffering. Two things...

I. Why Do We Suffer?
II. Who Is Our Example?

I. WHY DO WE TO SUFFER?

A. Because we are Christians

1. In Matthew 10:22a Jesus said, "And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake...." When a man becomes a Christian, he becomes a target of hate. As Satan is the enemy of Christ, so he is our enemy, as well. How often have we said, "What have I ever done to that person?" Or, "What have I done to deserve this?" Listen, we don't have to do anything to be mistreated and hated by the world. Look at what it says about Jesus (vs. 22): "Who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth." So, then, we should not be surprised when we are not well-received by the unbelieving world. Jesus said in 1 John 3:13; "Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you."

B. Because we are called (vs. 21a)

1. In Philip. 1:28-29, Paul wrote, And in nothing
terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God. [29] For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake.

2. When the disciples had been brought before the
Jewish council for preaching Christ, they were beaten and then sent away, forbidden to ever preach in the name of Christ again. Of course, they continued to preach anyway: "And they departed from ...
