3 John 1:1-14 (vs. 9)

ILLUS: It is said that Dolly Madison, wife of the fourth president of the United States, was one of the most popular women in American history. Wherever she went, she charmed and captivated everyone-obscure and well-known, rich and poor, men and women alike. She was once asked to explain the secret of her power over others. Surprised by the question Mrs. Madison exclaimed, ''Power over people? I have none. I desire none. I merely love everyone.''

Such was not the case with Diotrephes. Diotrephes was a man of selfish pride-a man who desired to have the preeminence and power over people.

INTRODUCTION: In this letter, John mentions three men: Gaius, to whom the letter is addressed, Diotrephes, and a man by the name of Demetrius.

In the first part of the chapter, we will read about John's respect and love for Gaius. In (vv. 9-11), he talks about his distain for Diotrephes. Finally, in (vs. 12), he gives honorable mention to Demetrius.

I. A WARM GREETING TO GAIUS (VV. 1-8)

A. His love for Gaius (vs. 1)

1. There was something special about this man, Gaius. Not only was he loved by John, but he was loved by many others in the Christian community. John addresses him as the ''well beloved Gaius.''

a. While it is true that not everyone is going to like us, and not everyone is going to love us, if we live our lives in an unpretentious manner, and if we show kindness to all, it will go a long way in causing others think favorably of us.
